Timothy
The Young Elder
Key Scripture
“God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7
✦Life Story
Timothy was a young man from Lystra whose Greek father and Jewish mother gave him a faith education from childhood. Paul met him on his second missionary journey and recognized something in him worth investing in. He became Paul's most trusted companion and delegate — sent to difficult churches, entrusted with hard messages, and eventually left as the leader of the church in Ephesus, one of the most important congregations in the early church. Timothy struggled with timidity. Paul wrote him two letters, both essentially saying: stir up the gift in you. Don't let anyone look down on you because of your youth. God did not give you a spirit of fear. His story gives voice to every young person who doubts whether they are enough — the answer is in whose they are.
