Joshua
The Conqueror of Canaan
Key Scripture
“Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee.”
— Joshua 1:9
✦Life Story
Joshua served Moses for forty years in the wilderness, learning what it meant to trust God in the long, unglamorous middle of a journey. When Moses died, the mantle fell to him — and God gave him the same commission three times in one chapter: be strong and courageous. He led Israel across the Jordan at flood stage, conquered Jericho by marching around it, and systematically took the land God had promised. He was not perfect and made some costly mistakes, but his final speech to Israel stands as one of the great acts of covenant renewal in Scripture: Choose this day whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
Famous Scriptures
Joshua 1:8–9
Be Strong and Very Courageous
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Joshua 24:15
As for Me and My House
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 3:5
Sanctify Yourselves
“And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you.”
Daily Challenge
Step across your Jordan today — the circumstance that has you hesitating on the bank — trusting that God's word is more stable than the flood in front of you.
Prayer
Lord, give me Joshua's courage to cross the river when it is flooding and to march around the walls that still look solid. Help me to obey the strategy You give, even when it doesn't make military sense. Amen.
